First Reading Podcast

If you often feel out of your depth in the Old Testament, you’re not alone!

Most parishioners feel wary of the Old Testament. Most preachers routinely skip over the OT reading, mentioning it only in passing, or using it as support for a sermon on the Gospel reading.

But we do ourselves a disservice if our diet of Scripture is stingy on such a large and nourishing portion of the Bible.

“First Reading” is a podcast designed to help preachers and other lovers of Scripture drink deeply from the richness of the Old Testament. Revolving around the OT readings in the Revised Common Lectionary, each week Rachel Wrenn and Tim McNinch offer contextual cues, discuss Hebrew linguistics, help you hurdle preaching pitfalls, and offer a couple of preaching angles to spark ideas for sermons.

Weekly episodes run around 10 minutes. One week a month, we invite leading Old Testament scholars to join us for a deeper dive (~45 minutes). Episodes air on the website and in the Apple podcast app (and other podcast repositories) two weeks ahead of the lectionary date, to give you time to listen and prepare great sermons! Find “First Reading” at firstreadingpodcast.com or subscribe wherever you get podcasts.
